Wendgräben: A mansion by Hermann Muthesius

In spring 2001 the Deutsche Gesellschaft in Sachsen-Anhalt e.V. published the brochure "Wendgräben" in its series "Schlösser und Gärten in Sachsen-Anhalt" (Castles and Gardens in Sachsen-Anhalt).

Financial and ideal support, without which the print would have been impossible, was given by the family von Wulffen. Dr. Irene Roch-Lemmer, academic teacher of the author, read and reread the many drafts and gave helpful advise. The present-day photographs were made by Volkmar Billeb.

The mansion Wendgräben was being planned by Hermann Muthesius (1861-1927) during the years 1910 to 1912. The house was ordered by Hans Waldemar von Wulffen (1864-1942). Today Wendgräben is used as a conference-centre of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung e.V.

Alexander von Bismarck, president of the Deutsche Gesellschaft in Sachsen-Anhalt e.V., wrote in the preface of the brochure:

"By this publication - as well as through further events concerning the castles, their maintenance and usage - we want to bring closer to the greater public the value of rural architecture and the cultural accomplishments of the owners of castles in the past. Concerts and exhibitions will serve these aims, too. We want to present the cultural heritage of our fathers. We want to show the importance of maintaining this heritage for future generations."
